AUSLAN
Auslan (Australian Sign Language) is the recognised language of the Deaf community in Australia. At The Patch Primary School, Auslan is taught as the school’s language program across all year levels. This commitment reflects our belief in the importance of promoting accessibility, inclusion, and cultural understanding within our learning community.
Learning Auslan provides students with the opportunity to develop communication skills that support and respect linguistic and cultural diversity. It empowers students to engage meaningfully with members of the Deaf and non-verbal community, fostering empathy, inclusion, and social awareness.
At The Patch, we implement a structured Auslan program that aligns with the Victorian Curriculum. The program is designed so that each classroom teacher delivers Auslan lessons, allowing students to learn alongside their teachers. This whole-school approach ensures that both students and staff develop their skills in Auslan, embedding inclusive communication practices throughout the school.
Through our Auslan program, The Patch Primary School aims to create a learning environment where all forms of communication are valued and every individual is supported to participate fully in our school community.
